This piece is more to do with the politics of my youth than with anything in the present. It’s also about my friend Craig Thomas and the politics of his youth.

I don’t know about Craig, but I am haunted by a particularly nasty incident when I mercilessly harangued my nan on some aspect of Marxist philosophy. She was kind and noble and probably forgot my behaviour the next day. I still wish I could tell her that I’m really sorry, but she wore out and died a few years ago.

That’s the thing about righteousness. It comes with a terrible swift sword.

Nowadays, I try really hard to at least tolerate my fellow human beings. Even when they’re patently wrong. Apart from that, I don’t believe in belief any more. I used to think the Internationale could unite the human race. If only it were true.
