Listening to Funeral for a Friend’s Hours while driving through the Brecon Beacons between Builth and Merthyr recently, I was thinking that Matt Davies’ bleak lyrics are, especially when set to such hauntingly beautiful melodies, typical of the dark side of the Welsh temperament.

But on second thoughts, I reckon FFAF’s assured playing and maturity of sound are more indicative of the confidence you can find in Wales nowadays. Their sound is more reminiscent of the American West Coast than the Welsh South Coast and everything from their production to their record label (Atlantic) indicates future mega-stardom.

Their themes will be familiar to kids in small towns the world over. And the inspiration for this piece will be apparent to anyone who has heard Funeral for a Friend’s music.

Women's Cymru Claws T Shirt

When we started this label, I swore we'd never produce anything related to rugby, or anything red for that matter. It's not that I've got anything against rugby or the colour red - I used to be handy at number 5 and avidly follow the national team, it’s just that you might be forgiven for thinking red is the only colour we wear in Wales and that rugby is our only interest.

But a few months ago, the Lord Chancellor wrote to Welsh companies asserting that the emblem ‘usually known as the Prince of Wales Feathers’ is ‘the personal property of the Prince of Wales’. Fair play to him. He's right as it happens.

The three feathers is a personal brand of the English monarch’s eldest son, just like Duchy Originals. It’s a French symbol with a common German motto meaning ‘I serve’ tacked underneath. It has no relevance to Wales or Welshness at all and it has no business being on the shirts of our national team.

So I designed these shirts to show my patriotism, to support the boys and to tell Charles where he can stick his feathers. The men's version has proved popular so here's one for women.
