Saunders Says T Shirt "Restoring the Welsh language in Wales is nothing less than a revolution. It is only through revolutionary means that we can succeed." So said Saunders Lewis, Welsh writer and revolutionary, 1895 - 1985. Like Lewis, I was born into a Welsh family living in England. Unlike Lewis, I'm not a speaker – not yet anyway, Teach Yourself Welsh and a bit of effort on my part will surely remedy that. Nevertheless, I can appreciate Lewis' vision and the strategy that resulted in an extraordinary legacy. The fact that two contestants on Channel 4's Big Brother were able to speak to together in Welsh, and that the broadcaster had to use subtitles rather than ban it's use, is testiment to what Lewis achieved. We now have the opportunity to unite behind one of the oldest languages in Europe. And like so many other Europeans, we'll use English to make our money. Each of us has a national duty to become fluent in Welsh. It's that important to our rebirth as an independent nation. Obviously this piece is a parody of the seminal Katharine Hamnett shirt designed for publicist Paul Morley and the band Frankie Goes to Hollywood in 1983. Even if you don't remember the original, I think the piece still works quite well. Printed black and red on 165-gram white 100% cotton jersey. Price £18.00 (£20.70 inc. VAT)
