I had thought Nick Foulkes, the journalist, author and 39^th Best Dressed Man in Britain – according to GQ magazine – was an English toff. It turns out he’s a Welsh taff, look you.

Nick has a beautiful way with the English language. He once wrote a piece of which the premise was, as I recall, that it’s only when you take the boy out of the Valleys that he truly flowers.

Considering just the fashion industry for a moment, it's hard to imagine the likes of Jeff Banks, Julien Macdonald or David Emanuel thriving in the beer-swilling, fag-stained environment of home. It's such a shame they had to go to London to blossom.

I presume Nick’s 39^th-best-in-Britain-wardrobe will be entirely devoid of T-shirts – in his Saville Row suits he doesn't seem like a T-shirt kind of guy – so this piece is dedicated to him.
