Blackwood Rangers T Shirt

With the failure of the Chartist insurrection in 1839, known troublemaker Daniel Jenkins was forced to flee from Blackwood, the place where the fateful march on Newport began. Rather than face deportation to Tasmania, a punishment suffered by the Chartist leader John Frost, Daniel worked his passage to America and made his way to Texas, which had then only recently won its war of succession with Mexico.

Despite having no military experience other than that gained by marching with a column of Chartists armed only with a pickaxe handle, he enlisted in a company of men raised by President Sam Houston under Captain John Coffee ‘Jack’ Hays to ‘act as Rangers’ on the frontier.

The Texas Rangers were so named because, in these early days, they ranged over a huge territory operating more as paramilitaries to combat Indian raids and Mexican incursions than as law enforcement officers.

Anyway, this piece is dedicated to Daniel Jenkins, the first and last of the Blackwood Rangers.
